Drywall Repair DIY: Small Holes
Why is it that we all get excited about DIY like building furniture or cooking a meal from scratch? When moving into my last apartment, I wanted my new home to be comfortable and welcoming, so I took out the hammer and nails. I am an artist, and I knew that if I could not make any changes when it came time for decorating, it would stifle my creativity.
The day I moved out, I realized my landlord would charge me for any damages that weren’t normal wear and tear. That means no more giant holes in the drywall from where we put up our slanted bookshelf or all those spots on the floor from when a pet bird constantly pooped everywhere! To fix it up before he saw how terrible things looked, here’s what I did.
You’ve probably heard of some pretty crazy ways to fill up small holes, like using toothpaste or aspirin. I don’t advise that you use any of these. Spackle is a super affordable option and will do the job right in no time at all – so spend just a couple of bucks on it instead!
I used some spackle on top of everything, which, at first glance, made it difficult to notice any patches. That also gives some time to paint (or get someone else who knows better than you) to make your walls look fresh again after this temporary patch job is finished if this is an extra step you want to take.
If you need a quick fix for small holes in your wall, all you have to do is grab some spackle and sandpaper. If the only problem with your walls is a pesky little nail or screw holes that don’t go through the drywall, then all it takes is a hammer, spackle, fine grit paper (or block), and putty knife.
Below are some points to consider before you go shopping:
• You don’t have to repaint an entire wall because there are a few tiny nail holes. Instead, you can dab on touch-up paint with a soft cloth, and it will quickly cover up the repair work once filled and dry.
• It’s crucial to prime patched walls before painting a different finish over them. The higher the gloss, the more noticeable differences in textures between your patches and surrounding paint will be!
The best way you’re going to see your deposit back is if you go through these simple steps:
Dings and Dents of Small Size
Using a drywall knife, scrape away loose debris from the hole. Cover with Spackle and let it cure 24 hours or up to 48 hours for heavy repair work before sanding smooth and painting over damaged area.
Nailheads That Have Popped Off
When a nail fails to hold the stud in place and backs up, this causes the nail head to pop out of the wall.
• To reattach the drywall to stud, drive the screw in 1.5″ above popped nail head and make sure it sinks below the surface of the wallboard so you can apply Spackle over the top for a quality finish.
• After the screw head and nail hole are covered with Spackle, wait 24 hours or the time recommended in instructions. Then sand until smooth again.
